Embarking on a voyage through the legendary Drake Passage is a rare and captivating experience that only a select few are fortunate enough to undertake. The rugged landscapes of the southern tip of the Americas provide a dramatic backdrop, but it’s the gradual disappearance of the distant cliffs marking the ‘End of the World’ that truly evokes a sense of awe, mystery, and enchantment. As you set sail from Cape Horn, the feeling of venturing towards the unknown , towards Antarctica’s icy realm, is nothing short of extraordinary.

Day 3: Athens – Santorini.

Breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to port, for your speed boat to Santorini. Arrival, pickup and transfer to Indian restaurant for lunch and then to hotel for check in. Free evening at leisure, transfer for dinner at restaurant and overnight at Santorini.

For those apprehensive about crossing the Drake Passage, rest assured that even amid turbulent seas, you’ll find solace in the company of soaring albatrosses and perhaps even a protective pod of humpback whales or hourglass dolphins. The an convergence of warm and cool ocean currents  creates environment teeming with spectacular marine life.

Day 3&4: Drake Passage

Navigating the legendary Drake Passage stands as a rare and remarkable experience, granted to only a fortunate few. The rugged landscape at the southern tip of the Americas already exudes a sense of untamed wilderness. However, witnessing the distant cliffs of the renowned ‘End of the World’ gradually recede into the horizon adds an element of grandeur, mystery, and enchantment to the journey. Embark on this expedition, setting course from Cape Horn, and venture into the frigid depths of Antarctica.

The voyage across the Drake Passage is a remarkable odyssey steeped in the lore of maritime adventure. As you approach Antarctica , colossal icebergs salute your arrival, heralding your entry into a realm where snow and ice are the dominant features, and creatures like penguins and whales roam freely. Your initial encounter with this uncharted territory will likely occur at
the South Shetland Islands. Here, you can trace the footsteps of history’s explorers most while illustrious and daring exploring renowned, snow-covered landmasses such as Elephant and Deception Island.

Day 5: Antarctica sound

The Antarctic Sound, situated at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, welcomes travelers with its awe-inspiring landscapes of towering icebergs calved from the Larsen Ice Shelf. Named after the pioneering vessel that navigated its waters in 1902, this region presents a sensory spectacle of nature’s grandeur. Here, amid the monochrome vistas, one encounters colonies of Gentoo penguins and graceful cape petrels, thriving amidst the ice. Capturing the essence of this extraordinary realm demands honed photography skills to immortalize its raw beauty. As you prepare for this once-in-a- lifetime expedition, consider refining your photographic techniques to ensure your images reflect the magnificence of Antarctica.

Day 6,7&8 : Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula unravels upwards towards South America, reaching out a beckoning finger to the adventurous, who dare to explore this untamed realm. Stretching up from the heart of the world’s southernmost continent, the Antarctic Peninsula lies a mere 620 mile from Tierra del Fuego and, for many, offers a spectacular first taste of the snow-blanketed landscapes and colossal ice sculptures, which make up Earth’s least-explored continent. Unseen by humans until 1820 – a blink of an eye ago in relative terms – this is an adventure sure to make your hairs stand on end, as you experience the thrill of the truly unknown and extraordinary. The vast peninsula is sprinkled with research bases, which are at the frontline of human scientific endeavour, pushing to study and understand this unique landscape, its exceptional wildlife, and the impact that humans are having on this pristine continent. Witness cathedral-sized icebergs up close, and blue-hued glaciers, slowly slipping from imposing locations like Hope Bay. Blanched mountain peaks cover the peninsula, and you’ll find thousands of adorable Adelie penguin pairs thriving undisturbed in this peninsula’s unique setting.

Day 9: South Shetland Islands

The ice-covered Antarctic Peninsula stands out as one of the most easily accessible regions of mainland Antarctica, situated just 480 miles away from South America, across the renowned waters of Drakes Passage. Nestled near the northwestern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and separated by the Bransfield Strait, the South Shetland Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Antarctic Treaty, which suspends claims to their sovereignty. These islands host research bases maintained by several countries, and with abundant elephant seals and bustling colonies of Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie Penguins, the atmosphere can feel surprisingly lively. King George Island, the largest and most welcoming island, accommodates the majority of the research stations, some of which are inhabited year-round by small, resilient crews. However, despite appearances, these islands offer remarkable adventures in one of the planet’s most remote locales. The towering triple peaks of Mount Foster dominate the archipelago, and as you navigate into the heart of Deception Island’s awe-inspiring collapsed volcano caldera, you’ll feel the exhilaration in your chest. Explore the lunar landscapes within and perhaps even take a dip in the unexpectedly warm, geothermally-heated waters of Pendulum Cove. Elephant Island, steeped in Antarctic expedition lore, holds a prominent place in history as the site where Ernest Shackleton and his crew miraculously endured a harsh Antarctic winter in 1916 after the Endurance became trapped in ice. Uncover more compelling reasons to visit this incredible icy realm and learn why many regard the South Shetland Islands as Antarctica’s crown jewel by delving into our blog.

DAY 10&11: Drake Passage, Arrival in Puerto Williams

Nestled on Navarino Island along the southern shores of the Beagle Channel, Puerto Williams proudly asserts itself as the “southernmost city in the world.” Despite its petite population of approximately 2,500 residents, its claim is contested by the larger Argentinean city of Ushuaia, situated across the channel. The locale boasts breathtaking scenery, with rugged mountains, often dusted with snow, looming above the tree line. The iconic backdrop of the “Dientes de Navarino” competes with the renowned Torres del Paine further north. Originally inhabited by the resilient Yaghan people, Puerto Williams traces its modern roots to its establishment as a naval base in 1953, paying homage to the British-Chilean naval commander, John Williams Wilson. Initially serving strategic purposes like safeguarding territorial interests and supporting Antarctic bases, it now serves as a launchpad for scientific expeditions and Antarctic tourism. Unlike the bustling commercial hub of Ushuaia, Puerto Williams offers a tranquil ambiance, evoking a rustic village charm with its quaint buildings and the comforting scent of wood smoke wafting through the air. It stands as a serene sanctuary at the edge of the world.
